Rhode Island Red are large fowl that are a popular dual-purpose chicken breed known for their distinctive reddish-brown plumage, hardy temperament, and excellent egg-laying capabilities. They are known for being relatively calm, friendly, and good with both humans and other animals. 

Key Characteristics: 

Appearance:
Rhode Island Reds have a rich, reddish-brown plumage that can range from a deep mahogany to a lighter rust colour. They have yellow legs, yellow skin, and reddish-brown beaks. Cockerels are typically larger and have a more glossy, darker red plumage than hens. 

  • Size:
    Cockerels generally weigh around 3.5 to 4kg, while hens weigh around 2.5 to 3kg. 
  • Temperament:
    They are known for being relatively calm, friendly, and good with both humans and other animals. They can be somewhat assertive in a flock and may have a medium to high position in the pecking order. 
  • Egg Production:
    Rhode Island Reds are prolific layers, producing around 250-300 eggs per year. Their eggs are medium to large and light brown in color. 
  • Hardiness:
    They are a hardy breed that can tolerate various climates and housing conditions while still producing eggs. 
  • Origin:
    The breed originated in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the late 19th century
  • Rhode Island Red hens, a popular dual-purpose breed, are known for laying approximately 250-300 light brown eggs per year. They typically start laying around 4-5 months of age
