Orpington chickens are known for their friendly, docile temperament and are a popular dual-purpose breed. They have a distinctive appearance with a heavy, broad body, fluffy plumage, and a curvy, short back. Their feathers are dense and can get waterlogged in wet weather, so they need protection.

Key features include:

Appearance:

  • Plumage: The most striking feature is their fluffy, soft plumage, which gives them a dense, almost round appearance.
  • Body: They are a heavy breed with a broad body and a short, curved back.
  • Legs: They have short legs with thighs covered in feathers.
  • Other: They have a single comb (or rose comb, depending on the region), bright red wattles, and white earlobes.

Temperament:

  • Docile and Friendly:
Orpingtons are known for their gentle, friendly nature and are often considered good family pets.
  • Good with Children:
They are generally tolerant of being handled and are not prone to aggression.

Other Notable Traits:

  • Dual-Purpose: They are a good source of both meat and eggs.
  • Winter Hardy: They are relatively cold-tolerant and can withstand harsh winters, but their combs can be frostbitten, so protection is advised.
  • Egg Production: They lay light brown eggs, and while not top egg layers, they produce a respectable number, especially in their first few years.
  • Orpington chickens typically lay between 200 and 280 eggs per year. These eggs are large, light brown in colour. Egg production starts around 20-24 weeks of age, or 5-6 months
  • Broody Hens: Orpington hens are known to go broody and are considered good mothers.
